Much like other metropolitan municipalities, eThekwini Municipality water and sanitation officials show a preference for reinforced concrete reservoirs, especially for bulk water storage and despite being situated within the district, Pinetown based SBS® Tanks had been unable to secure the supply of a single tank to the community water supply and infrastructure projects.
Following the IMESA Conference in Durban, in October 2019, where SBS® Tanks showcased the advanced characteristics of the premium SBS® product range, eThekweni municipal officials invited the team to inspect several old steel modular installations, clearly demonstrating their frustration with the rusted and leaking infrastructure.
A pilot site was identified at Maphephethweni settlement near Inanda Dam where SBS® was required to replace the current tank hosting an effective storage volume of 10kl. To maintain invert levels and pressure in the system, the tank needed to be placed on the existing dwarf walls which were extended to suit the circular footprint of the new circular tank. Pre-stressed reinforced concrete slabs were placed on top the dwarf walls to provide a suitable anchoring base for the SBS Tank® Model ST04/02 with an effective capacity of 10kl.
