Continuous water supply is a necessity in the healthcare sector, where the lack of water can result in unhygienic conditions or the inability of healthcare professionals to deliver effective care. In some health facilities, such as rehabilitation centres, water is not only essential for the functioning of bathrooms and kitchens, for cleaning and patient care, it is also used for patient therapy such as hydrotherapy. This involves movement or exercises undertaken with the support of a therapist, in a body of water, such as a heated swimming pool, to assist with the healing and rehabilitation programme.
Situated in Gqeberha (previously known as Port Elizabeth), in the Eastern Cape, the Nurture Aurora Hospital provides physical rehabilitation and subacute inpatient and outpatient care to people who have suffered a debilitating accident or significant illness that has compromised their mobility and health. This includes brain or spinal cord injuries, strokes, major joint replacement surgeries or fractures, amputations, neurological conditions, and palliative care.
Aurora wanted to ensure that in the event of municipal water challenges, they would still be able to continue operations and provide optimal patient care. After consultation to establish the needs of the centre, SBS Tanks installed an Econo Range backup water storage tank with an effective storage capacity of 140,000 to provide backup water storage for the 74-bed rehabilitation facility and nine-bed high care unit.
The water storage tank was installed on a compacted sand bed, reducing the overall costs of the project, and the SBS Tanks EC14/02 was connected to both the on-site borehole, and the municipal water supply to ensure continuous water supply. A booster pump and a water treatment plant were included in the installation to ensure that all water used in the facility is potable and safe for consumption, delivering a complete integrated water supply solution.
